I'm Tiffany, and I live in an 'I've got it easy' neighborhood of Chicago. I trip and stumble over punctuation, and I post every Chuck Klosterman quote I come upon. |

This is my life.Mamihlapinatapai is a word from the Yaghan language of Tierra del Fuego, listed in The Guinness Book of World Records as the “most succinct word”, and is considered one of the hardest words to translate. It describes “a look shared by two people with each wishing that the other will initiate something that both desire but which neither one wants to start.” (via Martin)
I’ve been reading about the Yaghan language recently — it’s a language isolate, which means that it’s not part of a “school” of other languages, sharing no resemblance with others (e.g. English, German, and Swedish are all part of the Germanic family). Besides that, though, there is only one living person in the world who can still speak Yaghan — the second-to-last speaker died in 2005, and while there has been interest amongst Yaghan (Yagán) descendants in learning the language, at this time Cristina Calderón is the last full-blooded Yahgan and the only one who still speaks the language.
Can you imagine being the only person in the world who could speak a language? It’s kind of terrifying.
